Officials named for big revenge match

Thabo Spampool.

Much-travelled Thabo Spampool will referee December’s big rematch between Tommy Oosthuizen and Thabiso Mchunu at Emperors Palace.

The experienced official, who was one of the judges for the first fight in early September, will be the third man in the ring for the ABU cruiserweight title fight.

The former fighter has officiated in many big fights and has refereed fights involving the two previously. He was in the ring when Mchunu dominated Johnny Muller last year and he did duty when Tommy Oosthuizen fought Saul Roman in 2010.

Simon Mokadi refereed the first fight, but had little to do beyond the usual, with both boxers producing an entertaining scrap.

The ABU has also appointed the judges, who will be Simon Xamlashe of SA, Michael Neeqwave (Ghana) and John Shipanuka (Zambia).

Given the close first fight – Oosthuizen won a majority decision – the appointment of the judges is critical. They will need to keep a beady eye on the fight given how close the first was.

Dr Peter Ngatane will supervise the action.
