The nominees for the SA Boxing Awards were announced yesterday with a number of Golden Gloves’ star men in the running, not least Kevin Lerena and Thulani Mbenge, who will vie for the SA Boxer of the Year trophy.
Long-serving Golden Gloves stalwart Ruben Rasodi is also up for the Matchmaker of the Year award, which would be long overdue recognition for one of the game’s great servants.
Colin Nathan, who consistently notches up big wins, is again in the running for Trainer of the Year, as is Sean Smith, another member of the vibrant Golden Gloves team who trains Mbenge, among others.
Golden Gloves fighters Phila Mpontshane (co-promoter by Mzi Mnguni) and Lucky Monyebane will contest the KO of the Year.
Golden Gloves photographer James Gradidge has also received a nod, in the Media Person of the Year category for his consistently excellent work ringside.
The awards take place in East London on February 2.
