IBO hauls out the big guns for ‘Two Guns’
The International Boxing Organisation has entrusted the job of referee for the Kevin ‘Two Guns’ Lerena-Max Maslov cruiserweight title fight at Emperors Palace next month to experienced local man Tony Nyangiwe.
In addition, the IBO has appointed an experienced trio to judge the fight: two Italians in Matteo Montella and Giustino Di Giovanni and top SA official Ace Makaluza.
Andre van Grootenbruel of Belgium will oversee the action as fight commissioner.
Nyangiwe has refereed many of SA’s top boxers in recent years, among them Hekkie Budler, Simpiwe Konkco, Thabo Sonjica and Mzuvukile Magwaca.
Montella, meanwhile, was one of the judges when Tommy Oosthuizen recently surrendered his unbeaten status in Germany. He, too, has a wealth of experience, having also judged bouts involving Arthur Abraham, Marco Huck and Moruthi Mthalane.
His compatriot, Di Giovanni, has been ringside for fights involving Krzysztof Glowacki, Macbute Sinyabi and many others.
Makaluza, a former 40-fight welterweight pro, has earned his spurs as a boxing judge with countless appointments, including fights featuring Gideon Buthelezi, Konkco, Oosthuizen, Budler and Isaac Chilemba.
