Eastern Cape aces headed to Jozi
In light of their 30-year relationship, Rodney Berman has undertaken to feature two of Mzi Mnguni’s best prospects on a Gauteng show next April.
Last weekend, one of Mnguni’s protégés, Phila Mpontshana, outpointed Aphiwe Mboyiya to win the South African junior-lightweight title in Mdantsane.
The new champion (11-1) eked out a points win, earning him a spot on a Golden Gloves development tournament.
Golden Gloves will also feature promising strawweight Xolisa Magusha, who impressed in East London last month when he took out Ayanda Dulani in some style. The southpaw has fast hands and decent power which could make him a force in a highly competitive division.
“They’re both great talents,” said Berman. “I’m just delighted to be able to carry on a tradition of working with Mzi’s fighters.”
