The Super Four featherweight contest is set to go nuclear after Golden Gloves confirmed this weekend that the final would be for the WBC International title; this, on top of almost half-a-million Rand to the winner and a guaranteed fight in the US.

Having already piqued the interest of local fans, the Super Four now has the incentive of a place in the WBC top 10 for the winner, who will emerge from Azinga Fuzile, Lerato Dlamini, Simphiwe Vetyeka or Tshifhiwa Munyai.

The tournament kicks off at Emperors Palace on October 21 – “Four go to War” – with the final at the casino venue on February 18.

Dlamini, the IBF Youth champion, arguably has the toughest gig of all: he’ll be up against former world champion Vetyeka with 21-year-old phenom Fuzile fighting Munyai, the ex-Commonwealth king.

“Pound for pound, this is unquestionably the best-ever such tournament in South Africa,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “It wasn’t easy getting them on the same fight card, but they all see the end goal, which is a real shot at the big time. Whoever does prevail will unquestionably rank as one of the top featherweights around. It’s intriguing because there’s mixture of youth and experience, punchers and boxers. I hesitate to even name a favourite at this stage.”
