Just how good is Thulani Mbenge?
We’ll know soon enough given that he’s been matched tough against Jay Inson at Emperors Palace next weekend. And if he wins that he’ll be up against the formidable figure of Charles Manyuchi.
“I have great confidence in this kid and although a win is no foregone conclusion next week, I’ve signed Manyuchi for October,” said promoter Rodney Berman.
It’s a calculated risk because although there are dangers, Mbenge oozed class in his title-winning effort against Sean Ness and hasn’t been unduly stretched in his pro career.
The undefeated boxer is on a mission to make his mark on the welterweight division. He wants to continue not only his undefeated record but his knockout streak.
The SA welterweight champion will need to bring a similar confidence to a fight against Manyuchi, who famously beat hot Russian prospect Dmitry Mikhaylenko last year. Having fought in the heart of Russia, Joburg will hold no fears for the Zimbabwean.
Before then, however, the southpaw Inson must be beaten. Rated 15th by the WBO, he is unbeaten and packs a decent wallop.
