Hot form from HotBox heroes

Big ups to trainer Colin Nathan, who on Saturday had eight boxers try out for their pro licenses in Booysens.

All but one of them SA championship winners, they all received their paper work, which is tribute to the trainer who continues to do good work and attracts the best emerging talent.

The best of them was probably current SA light-heavyweight champion Ricky Tshabalala, who sparked his opponent within 30 seconds of their sparring session. He looked sensational in pressing his claims.

Other standouts included Aidan Quin, Sanele Omnathi and Francisco Rodrigues. Other HotBox fighters  to nail their licenses were Julian Cook, Marlon Verster, Tyrone Hall and Frank Rodrigues.

Amid a wild atmosphere – there were around 300 people packed into the famous Booysens Amateur Boxing Club – a total of 138 aspirants tried their luck with 78 succeeding.

Standards varied from dreadful to outstanding, but the mere turnout reflected a sport in vibrant health with enough talent to carry the flag for a few years yet.
