Hardball’s hard luck story: From street kid to contender

Kestna “Hardball” Davis, a rising star in the world of boxing, has defied the odds to become a formidable force in the ring. The Jamaican southpaw, who once roamed the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, found salvation in the sweet science and has been mentored by none other than boxing legend Lennox Lewis.
Davis, who since relocated to New Jersey on the US East coast, will now bring his skills to South Africa where he will feature on the “Rivalry Reloaded” card at Emperors Palace in early December.
As reported by The Ring, Davis was shot at the age of 12 while sleeping on the streets.
“I stole, I did everything, and I was shot when I was 12 sleeping on the street, and an inch over I would be paralysed,” Davis recounted. “There was a gym nearby and I borrowed clothes to go to a gym.”
Lewis, who took Davis under his wing, shared his own experience of finding purpose in boxing. “I felt compelled to help him,” said the former undisputed heavyweight champion. “Everyone needs attention. Today, he needs experience, and I know the recipe for him to get to the top.”
Davis’s amateur career was impressive, with over 70 wins and numerous titles. Now, as a professional, he’s eager to make his mark on the global boxing stage. His upcoming fight in South Africa thus presents an opportunity to showcase his skills and continue his rise to the top.
The plan is to fly him in 10 days before competition and to train out of Brian Mitchell’s Johannesburg gym.
Explained promoter Rodney Berman: “This is part of a wider collaboration with Lennox’s promotional company, Lion Promotions, and Golden Gloves is excited to have Kestna on the card. It adds a thrilling dimension to the show and of course with Lennox in the house, I’ve no doubt his protégé will be aiming to impress.”
