Golden Gloves is well represented in the newly-reinstated SA Boxing Awards, which take place in Durban in January.

The nominees were confirmed at a ceremony in Johannesburg last week and include two Golden Gloves representatives in the running for Boxer of the Year – Simpiwe Konkco and Xolisani Ndongeni.

Golden Gloves fighters are again in the thick of it for Fight of the Year honours with the Konkco-Hekkie Budler bout and the Johnny Muller-Kevin Lerena rematch both cracking the short list.

Fast-rising welterweight Thulani Mbenge predictably made the cut for Prospect of the Year.

Lerena’s dramatic stoppage of Muller, avenging the first fight, has been included in Knockout of the Year picks.

Last but not least, Colin Nathan is among the frontrunners for Trainer of the Year, confirming an outstanding 2016 for Golden Gloves.
