Doping mystery deepens

Following yesterday’s report that Micki Nielsen of Denmark had tested positive for steroids following his cruiserweight fight with Johnny Muller in SA last June, Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman described the report from the Institute of Drug-Free Sport as “dubious”.

Said Berman: “The report received is very inconclusive and we assume that Nielsen’s management [Sauerland Promotions] will call for the “B” sample to be tested. Taking into consideration, however, that the report came through some six months after the fight, and it was not sent to Golden Gloves or to Boxing South Africa, but from the Department of Sport and Recreation in South Africa, it reeks of leaks and the finding is very dubious.”

Berman has formally expressed his misgivings to SAIDS.
