Campbell has Georgia on his mind

Malkhaz Sujashvili, right, in action in Germany recently.

Rowan Campbell’s boxing education will continue apace when he fights Georgia’s Malkhaz Sujashvili at Emperors Palace on June 23.

The SA super-middleweight is being pushed hard by Golden Gloves, who believe he has the makings of something special.

In his last fight, in March, he crushed Masixole Botile to comfortably move to 6-0 as a pro.

Sujashvili figures to be tougher. He raced to 10-0 as a pro, but came unstuck in his last outing, narrowly losing to Ibrahim Guemues for the WBO European middleweight belt.

Promoter Rodney Berman has made no secret of his interest in signing Campbell to challenge for the vacant SA championship, presumably this year, so getting rounds in against Guemues could prove invaluable.

Reports from Georgia paint Sujashvili as a typical East European fighter: gritty and relentless with above-average power.
