Boxing’s first lady to grace Women’s Day tournament

Golden Gloves’ Women’s Day tournament – Mzansi Magic – has just got the ultimate seal of approval: Carol Tshabalala will be the ring announcer on the night.
It’s an apt appointment for the first lady of boxing, who brings sass and style to every event she attends. Moreover, Tshabalala has a passion for boxing that makes her one of the most influential figures on the local fight scene.

“Her energy is unbelievable,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “I couldn’t think of a better person to lead the way on Women’s Day.”
While the event will be headlined by Ricardo Malajika’s IBO championship bout, three women will box on the undercard. Unbeaten Caleigh Swart will be pitched into an IBO Africa title fight while stablemate Saarah Karriem will make her up-country debut. And local favourite Tyla Promnick will round out the action with a four-rounder.
Tshabalala, however, will be at the forefront given her two-decade role as a trailblazing South African sports broadcaster, producer, voice-over artist, and master of ceremonies. She has built an illustrious career, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Starting her career at 18 as an apprentice on SABC’s Sports Buzz, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a respected TV anchor, reporter, and voice-over artist. After a decade at SABC, she joined SuperSport in 2011, where she anchors major sporting events across football, boxing, and rugby.

Tshabalala also gained international recognition as the first African to host FIFA’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in 2011 and worked as a live studio anchor for the UK’s Premier League Productions.
Beyond broadcasting, Carol is a sought-after MC and ring announcer in boxing, known for her commanding presence and knowledge of the sport. Her versatility and charisma have made her a favorite voice in the boxing community, bringing energy and professionalism to major fight events.

She balances her media career with mentorship and motivational speaking, inspiring young women and aspiring broadcasters across Africa.
With Tshabalala on the mic, Women’s Day at Mzansi Magic promises not just world-class boxing, but a celebration of the power, passion, and progress women continue to bring to the sport.
