Big Tony gets the call

Tony Nyangiwe, second from right, will be the third man in the ring for the ‘Emperors Explosion’ headliner.

Experienced Tony Nyangiwe, who has officiated fights involving every major current SA professional, will be the third man in the ring when Kevin Lerena and Youri Kalenga clash for the vacant IBO cruiserweight belt at Emperors Palace next month.

His recent appointments have involved small fighters like Hekkie Budler, Moruti Mthalane and Simpiwe Konkco, but he’ll be stepping up, so to speak, for the muscular pairing of Lerena and Kalenga.

Confirming the appointments, the IBO have also appointed experienced Andile Matika as supervisor. The three judges will be Eddie Pappoe of Ghana, who recently officiated the big cruiserweight bout between Marco Huck and Mairis Breidis, plus Patrick Mkondiwa from Zimbabwe and Robert Hoyle from the US.

Hoyle, of Las Vegas, is one of the most active officials around, having worked fights involving Luis Ortiz, Jamie McDonnell, Jermall Charlo and Chris van Heerden in the past year.
