Big chance for small fighters

It might be lower down the fight card on October 22, but the DeeJay Kriel versus Nyelisani Thagambega rematch could be a thriller.

There’s already enough needle between the pair after their controversial first fight, but the bout now has added piquancy because the Gauteng title will be on the line. The winner will thus stand a chance of contesting the SA championship in 2017.

In July Thagambega was giving Kriel all the trouble he could handle, even sending him to the deck, but Kriel came storming back. He had Thagambega on his heels and there was a moment when the Limpopo strawweight turned his back, forcing what looked like an uneven stoppage by the referee.

There were no satisfied parties in the aftermath and promoter Rodney Berman quickly signed the rematch in order to settle things once and for all.
