No bridge too far for Lerena! No less an authority than WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman is a fan of both match-ups, calling them “sensational”.
No bridge too far for Lerena
It’s confirmed – Kevin Lerena will be back in action in July or August to contest the WBC bridgerweight challenge against the winner of the May 24 fight between champion Lucasz Rozanski and Lawrence Okolie in Poland.
This follows a directive from the World Boxing Council that the free negotiation period will follow two days later, on May 26, followed by a purse offer in case there is no agreement between the parties.
Whether Rozanski or Okolie prevails, the winner must make a first defence against Lerena, the interim champion who has flirted with heavyweight action but seems better suited at the bridgerweight limit.
If Rozanski is successful, promoter Rodney Berman is optimistic he could raise the money to draw the Pole to SA for the fight, having spoken to several potential sponsors.
However, Berman is less sanguine about drawing Okolie out of his UK stronghold on account of the strength of the Euro and the certainty of Okolie’s backers doing all they can to ensure a home bout if their man wins in May.
“Naturally, I’ll be keeping a close eye next month,” said Berman. “Both Rozanski and Okolie are power punchers, although that’s never deterred Kevin, whose speed and movement always make him very competitive.”
