The success of Sunday’s “Prospects at the Palace” tournament has spurred promoter Rodney Berman who says he would like to have two more editions before the year is out.
Over 1500 fans packed the big hall at Emperors Palace with supporters clearly warming to the “family day” approach that saw toddlers and little ones join their parents on a day when the action was red-hot.
Berman had reservations about a couple of the match-ups, but said he was delighted that the plan to showcase young aspirants had resonated with local fans.
“Nobody else is doing it, so why not? We want to give opportunities and nurture youngsters. I saw some real talent out there . . . the charisma and class of someone like Joshua Studdard was plain to see.”
Berman was also taken with the mature fighting style of Brandon Thysse and DeeJay Kriel. Thysse moved to 3-0 with a first-round knockout that was testament to power and good timing, while Kriel was all class as he dismantled the challenge of a determined Khotle Morabedi.
“This disproved the notion that SA boxing stocks are low,” insisted Berman. “All our boxers need is a chance to shine. I’m pleased we provided that on a great day for the local fight game.”
Golden Gloves’ next major tournament is on March 19 with world champion Hekkie Budler in the main event.
