Big-hearted boxing greats do their bit
Boxers are all heart, and it has been proven yet again.
Backing the Reach for a Dream Foundation, promoter Rodney Berman reached out to some of the world’s most prominent boxers, all of whom responded positively.
He approached heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, middleweight boss Gennady Golovkin, former heavyweight champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, plus cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk, who are all sending signed gloves to SA for auction on August 10.
Reach for a Dream is an NPO that gives hope to children fighting life-threatening illnesses through the fulfillment of their dreams.
“We’re hoping to raise a lot of money for this worthwhile cause,” said Berman. “I can’t speak highly enough of promoters like Tom Loeffler and my old friend Barry Hearn, who have helped secure the memorabilia. The boxers all willingly obliged.”
Three pieces will be auctioned on the show being called “Reach for the Stars: a Joshua/Klitschko/Golovkin Dream Team combination; a Usyk/Kevin Lerena combination – “in advance of a potential super fight between them,” quipped Berman – and a Brian Mitchell/Mike Tyson legends piece.
Golden Gloves has already stumped up an early R25 000 bid for the Dream Team piece, guaranteeing that as a minimal amount. Initial bids will run online – interested parties can email ggloves@worldonline.co.za with expressions of interest – and these will be carried forward to the August 10 tournament at Emperors Palace. The highest bids to that point will be announced, after which a live auction will take place.
All the items will be authenticated.
Once the pieces are put together, these will be demonstrated on the site.
