‘Supremacy’ – GGG v Canelo – lands on SuperSport in South Africa

The best boxing fight of 2017 – aptly titled “Supremacy” – is coming to SuperSport in South Africa on DStv.

Having brewed for three long years, the bout between multiple world middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez has been set for September 16 in Las Vegas with the action being broadcast live in South Africa on your World of Champions.

This will be available in South Africa on SS2 in the early hours of Sunday, September 17.

Golovkin is the consensus choice as the world’s best fighter at middleweight, but Alvarez is the lineal champion, the so-called “man who beat the man” by virtue of his defeat of Miguel Cotto two years ago.

When GGG knocked out Kell Brook last year, he extended his knockout streak to a record 23 consecutive stoppages; a record superior to any middleweight in history, among them Marvin Hagler and Carlos Monzon.  He is a devastating puncher, having been groomed in the arduous Eastern European boxing system where he had over 300 amateur fights and was never floored.

Alvarez is a different beast. He turned professional at the age of 15 went gone undefeated through his first 43 bouts by blending supreme skills with accurate punching. Fighting in the best traditions of Mexican boxing, he slayed a raft of top boxers, among them Austin Trout and Shane Mosley.

Even now, he’s won 49 of 51 fights, his only reverse a narrow points defeat to Floyd Mayweather jnr in 2013.

Ironically, this fight has “Mexico” written all over it. Apart from Alvarez being born in Guadalajara, Golovkin has long traded on fighting “Mexican style” to such a degree that he’s a popular staple among South Americans who adore his devastating punching.

Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and GGG Promotions, not only will this major fight conclusively determine the best middleweight in the world, but the winner will stake a claim to being the pound-for-pound king, a mythical title accorded to only the very best.

Big fight fans in South Africa can watch via their decoders or on DStv Now, online or the app.
