Eric Kapia Mukadi – have gloves, will travel.

It’s never a good idea to disregard Harold Volbrecht, so when the former welterweight champion says to look out for Eric Kapia Mukadi, listen up.

Mukadi, of DRC, steps up against Thulani Mbenge for the ABU welterweight belt at Emperors Palace on Thursday.

While the popular view says that Mbenge will steamroll his way to KO win number eight, Volbrecht says “not so fast”.

“I know Eric has been brought in as the opponent, but he’s going to give Mbenge a helluva fight. The kid has been in my gym for a couple of months and has been sparring with the likes of Johnny Muller, who is much bigger. He handles himself just fine. He’s not going to roll over for Mbenge.”

Kapia is unbeaten in 18 fights (17-0-1), although it’s difficult to get a line on his form as his opponents have all been Congolese and he has only ever fought in his home country.

Mbenge has had a flawless run in the pros since turning to the paid ranks last year. His seven wins have all come inside the distance, although he hasn’t been matched tough.

The fight is part of the “Christmas Cracker” event that showcases the very best of young talent.
