Sky’s the limit for SA’s best

SA welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge, one of the most talented SA boxers to emerge in recent years.

After a prolific 2017 that saw the emergence of Kevin Lerena, Thulani Mbenge and Azinga Fuzile into world class, Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman is predicting more of the same from the talented trio.

He’s banking on all three building on their recent success and claiming international honours.

Lerena is already IBO champion and is poised for a big breakthrough later in the year – provided he beats Dmytro Kucher of Ukraine on March 3. If he’s successful against the tough East European, he’ll box in Azerbaijan to leverage his name overseas.

Berman is so confident he’ll do so, he’s already putting together a package deal that includes Mbenge on the undercard, although he too must overcome a tough foe in Diego Cruz of Mexico.

“These are exciting times for SA boxing,” said Berman, adding that he was intrigued by the potential of Fuzile given his youth and precocity.

Fuzile, of course, marches on to the final of the Super Four against Lerato Dlamini, no easy task given that Dlamini has serious designs on an international career too.
