Ryno rematch fizzles out
Ryno Liebenberg will forever wonder what might have been after his pursuit of Vincent Feigenbutz fizzled out last week.
Liebenberg lost controversially against the German in February and the IBF subsequently called for a rematch. The fight was thrown open to purse bids – the deadline was last Thursday – but this was cancelled after Feigenbutz, the Intercontinental belt holder, opted for “another direction”.
The news will come as a hammer blow to Liebenberg, who fought outstandingly and strongly believes he would have the upper hand a second time around.
With Feigenbutz out of the picture, Golden Gloves’ plans with Liebenberg will change course.
“It was more Feigenbutz [and his ranking] than the title that was important,” said promoter Rodney Berman.
Golden Gloves is now lining up an ABU title shot which, under the circumstances, might be the better option.
