Komanisi now fighting ‘the other guy’

Lusanda Kominisi.

Lusanda Komanisi will have his first bout in the lightweight division against top contender Michael Mokoena and not SA champion Thompson Mokwana, as erroneously reported last week.

Days after signing the former IBO featherweight champion, Golden Gloves confirmed Mokoena for the September 1 match at Emperors Palace. The ABU belt is likely to be on the line.

Mokoena (12-2) is on a hot streak, five of his last six wins having come inside the distance. A pressure fighter, he’s beaten a slew of SA contenders to position himself for a title crack.

Komanisi last fought in September and is eager to get back into the win column. There are no guarantees against Mokoena, but if he wants to prosper at lightweight, a win, preferably in explosive style, is non-negotiable.

“This will be a good test of where Kominisi is at,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “Mokoena is a natural lightweight with a heavy punch, so if Komanisi can see him off, he’ll have a bright future in the division.”

Komanisi versus Mokoena is just one of several top fights being put together for the September tournament.
