Hot prospect Campbell draws a toughie
Rowan Campbell’s boxing education will be accelerated next month when he fights SA title challenger Masixole Botile on the “Palace Pandemonium” tournament on March 3.
The fast-rising Joburg super-middleweight, unbeaten in five outings, impressed a tough crowd in his last fight when he outworked durable Jackson Masamba at Emperors Palace.
“He looks a little special,” promoter Rodney Berman remarked on the night.
Despite an in and out record, Botile (5-10-1) has fought all the division’s big local names, among them Roland Francis, Balema Weliya, Giovanni Bushby and Christopher Buthelezi.
Four years ago, the PE-based fighter dropped a decision to Weliya for the SA title.
“It’s a big step-up for Campbell given that he’s had only a handful of fights,” said Berman. “There’s a lot to like about him . . . he’s a tight, compact fighter with neat touches. I’m hoping for a big year from him.”
The fresh-faced youngster hasn’t put a foot wrong so far, his perfect four from four in 2017 rocketing him into the public consciousness.
Doing a job on Botile would continue that happy trajectory.
