Exciting start to 2019 looms

The magnificent Emperors Palace backdrop – the home of major SA boxing.

Golden Gloves is planning a busy start to the year with events set for February and March, with US exposure also thrown in for good measure.

Laying out his grand design, promoter Rodney Berman says the first Emperors Palace show will be on February 24, having shifted from February 8 for logistical reasons. It will be strongly focused on SA boxing’s vibrant new wave with SA super-middleweight champion Rowan Campbell, Ricardo Malajika, Boyd Allen and Keaton Gomes all lined up for action.

“I’m determined to make 2019 a year to remember for Emperors Palace, SuperSport and Golden Gloves,” said Berman, who will follow up February with a cracking show in March. This will herald the long-awaited return of IBO cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena, who will be having his first fight since June, a delay caused by a major shoulder operation.

The idea is then to showcase IBO welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge in the US and, presuming Lerena wins in March, unleashing the cruiserweight on the American market towards the middle of 2019.
