‘Call to Glory’ gets fans buzzing
There is another seven weeks to go until the showdown between Tommy Oosthuizen and Thabiso Mchunu, but already the demand for tickets is far outstripping availability.
“We’ll probably have a sellout before tickets go on sale!” a delighted Rodney Berman said yesterday.
He said that the fight, scheduled for September 1’s “Call to Glory” tournament, had fired up local supporters who traditionally respond favourably to match-ups with needle between prominent boxers.
Mchunu underlined his credentials with a blowout against Richard Bolotnik a fortnight ago while Oosthuizen’s narrative only ever lends itself to drama and excitement.
Both lefties, they otherwise have very little in common style-wise, Mchunu being a defensive wizard with Oosthuizen relying on offence and fast hands.
Berman is toying with several other big local fights, mentioning DeeJay Kriel against Simpiwe Konkco as a case in point. Lusanda Komanisi against Xolisani Ndongeni also has the makings of a riveting contest, although it might need the slow burn to ramp up greater public excitement.
