Johnny Muller has been matched seriously tough in his past three fights and gets a chance to work his way back into the win column at Emperors Palace on Thursday.

His opponent is Herman Potgieter, who may not ring any bells, but is a former SA amateur heavyweight champion who will be looking to use Muller to springboard his way into contention. He won’t lack for effort and will come hard, although it takes more than that to rattle the fearless Muller.

He’s likely to welcome the opportunity after a run of brutal fights, against Oleksandr Usyk, Kevin Lerena and Micki Nielsen.

The fight is one of a number that make the “Christmas Cracker” a must-see affair, especially as it will herald the final curtain for big-time boxing in Gauteng in 2016.

The main fight is an intriguing ABU welterweight title contest between the unbeaten pair of Thulani Mbenge and Eric Kapia Mukadi.

Exciting Lucky Monyebane will continue his boxing education with a four-rounder against Bheki Mahlangu.

There’s also been much talk around the pro debut of light-heavyweight Rowan Campbell, based primarily on his usefulness as a sparring partner to Kevin Lerena. Any youngster who can hang tough with Lerena is surely worth a look.

Promising junior-middleweight Nathan Hammond will have his second outing at Emperors Palace with the early action focused on a junior-welterweight opener (Jabulani Makhensi versus Kalela Kaduma) and a welterweight bout between Tyler McMutri and Sidonelo Ndzimande.

Boxing starts at 7.30pm (there is no live TV).
