Mzansi Magic, a night of champions, comebacks and queens of the ring
On August 9, Emperors Palace transforms into a colosseum of courage and celebration as Golden Gloves, in association with iME, presents Mzansi Magic, a Women’s Day boxing event that promises more than just punches and power.
It’s a vibrant tribute to fighters of all levels, blending elite talent, fan favourites, and rising stars into one irresistible fight night.
Topping the card is South Africa’s IBO junior bantamweight champion Ricardo Malajika, who puts his title on the line against the formidable Jayson Mama from the Philippines. Malajika, known for his laser-sharp speed and smooth combinations, faces a rugged challenger looking to turn the tables in hostile territory.
But the drama doesn’t end there. Popular Roarke Knapp makes his much-anticipated return, determined to reassert his reputation in the junior middleweight division. After time away from the spotlight, he faces the explosive Jhun Rick Carcedo, a Filipino fighter who’s not coming for a handshake. For Knapp, it’s about redemption; proving the fire still burns, the skills are still sharp, and his story isn’t finished.
Meanwhile, the heavyweight division roars to life as Juan Alberts, the unbeaten fan favourite, takes on Ghana’s Philip Ayeh Tetteh. Alberts has captured the imagination with his charm outside the ring and clout inside it. This bout is another step in building his legacy as one of the country’s most exciting big men.
At the heart of Mzansi Magic, though, is the celebration of women’s boxing, and what a lineup it is. The glittering jewel of the Emperors Palace ring, Tyla Promnick, returns, unbeaten and unshaken, ready to extend her flawless run where it all began. Joining her are Cape Town’s fiercest daughters: Caleigh Swart, whose last performance lit up Cape Town’s beach club arena, and Saarah Karriem, bringing heat and hunger to the night’s action.
It’s not just a boxing event. It’s a statement. Mzansi Magic is where champions defend, contenders rise, and women take centre stage in a celebration of heart, power, and pride.
August 9. Emperors Palace. The gloves are on, and the magic is real.
