The Golden Gloves office is a hive of activity following the recent signing of the rematch between Tommy Oosthuizen and Thabiso Mchunu.
“The demand for tickets is mind-boggling,” said promoter Rodney Berman, adding that Thulani Mbenge’s popularity also gave the show greater appeal.
Inbetween all of this, there has been an offer for Ryno Liebenberg to fight Azizbek Abdugofurov for the WBC’s Silver super-middleweight belt. The Uzbek recently fought – and beat – Alfonso Tissen on points.
Tissen, who recently lost to Liebenberg, said: “The guy is a good boxer, but not nearly as strong as Ryno. I believe I beat him, as did many who were ringside.”
Based in Malaysia, Abdugofurov has a long and pedigreed amateur background. In his most recent outing, he beat former WBA champion Dmitrii Chudinov.
“Ja, he’s pretty good,” said Liebenberg. “I’d love to get a chance to fight him.”
