Having already secured the signature of Thabiso Mchunu, promoter Rodney Berman will meet with trainer Harold Volbrecht today to obtain Tommy Oosthuizen’s signature for their proposed rematch on December 8.
Berman believes he can make a virtue of the growing row over the result, with many of Mchunu’s supporters claiming he was robbed last weekend. While it was hardly the worst decision, it was indeed a close fight and there is merit in making the two do it again.
It proved yet again the value of local match-ups where the best fight the best and often produce a cracker of a fight. While the Oosthuizen-Mchunu bout never offered fireworks, it was absorbing from a tactical point of view with both skillsets laid bare.
Although the air was thick with talk of an Oosthuizen-Kevin Lerena super fight, it will be several months before the fight can be made, not least because of the likely rematch taking place, plus Lerena must overcome his shoulder injury.
“What this means is that we will have a real extravaganza to see out the year,” said Berman.
The main fight will involve IBO welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge, Mchunu’s stablemate, against a very credible opponent.
And hopefully Volbrecht manages to get his fighter to pen the deal.
