Having developed 34 champions at national and world level, Colin Nathan’s credentials as a top trainer are beyond question. Now, his excellence has been rewarded by the World Boxing Council, which has invited him to become a member of its Trainers Committee.
This is a singular honour for the 39-year-old South African with the WBC acknowledging him as one of the most outstanding trainers.
“I’m blown away,” said Nathan, who couldn’t suppress his excitement, but not before acknowledging his late father Stan, also a trainer, who fostered in him a passion for boxing. Indeed, Nathan attended his first tournament in Cape Town at the tender age of seven.
“I learned the game at his knee . . . to have come this far is very humbling.”
Bob Yalen, technical director of the WBC and a former director of ESPN boxing, duly invited Nathan to China to help conduct a training seminar. He leaves tomorrow.
The intention of the Trainers Committee is to establish a code of ethics for trainers and to standardise training and reporting, among other duties.
The hope, too, is that Nathan learns from his colleagues and imparts some of those lessons to SA boxing.
