Big heavyweight hopeful headed to SA
He’s big, fast and strong and he’s headed for South Africa.
His name is Azangue Drevet Arnold and he’s a basketball-loving boxer from Cameroon based in the Philippines.
Keen to get his pro career kick-started, he recently reached out to Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves.
Berman has since invited him to South Africa for a trial under former cruiserweight star Peter Smith, who looks after Kevin Lerena.
While little is known of the heavyweight, he reached the semifinals of the African Youth Championships in 2014 and was Cameroon champion in 2015.
“He looks like he could be very useful,” said Berman, who has watched clips of the youngster and likes what he sees. “To get a credible heavyweight out of Africa is like the Holy Grail. Hopefully he shapes up under Smith and we’ll know soon enough.”
Arnold isn’t licensed, but presumably that would be no more than a formality based on his amateur experience at a high level.
Cameroon has produced a number of top flight boxers over the years, among them Sakio Bika, Carlos Takam (who challenges Anthony Joshua this weekend) and Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam.
