All eyes on Soweto for Sunday boxing
Fan favourite Warren Joubert makes the second defence of his SA junior-welterweight title against eighth-ranked Tshifhiwa Munyai in Soweto on Sunday.
The action will be broadcast live on SuperSport 8 from 2pm.
Joubert is on a run of three wins, having seen off a slew of top contenders in the past two years. The wear and tear of a long career has begun to show, however, and he will need to be in good form to see off Munyai, an awkward counter-puncher whose movement could cause problems.
Trainer Colin Nathan is wary of the threat from Munyai, saying that Joubert had trained especially hard to produce a better showing than he did in June when he beat Lungisa Jikani.
“We’ve had very good sparring against Lerato Dlamini, Nomeva Ndongeni and Shaun Ness. Warren is ready, as he’ll have to be. Munyai is a little sneaky, likes to fight off the backfoot. Warren will make the necessary adjustments.”
There is an action-packed undercard on the Rainbow Promotions bill, headed by junior-bantamweight puncher Sabelo Ngembinyane against Rofiwa Nemukongwe.
Other fights see junior-flyweights Zolile Miya and Mpho Sefora battle over six rounds, Lerato Kgole and Thabang Ramagole meet over six in a junior-flyweight contest, Fernando Rodrigues versus Nkosinathi Malinga in a four-round middleweight clash and junior-lightweights Mohammed Saidi and Lerato Dlamini box over four rounds.
