Women’s Day event welcomes historic female official appointments

The International Boxing Organisation (IBO) has responded swiftly and positively to calls for greater representation by appointing two leading South African female officials to key roles at the upcoming Women’s Day boxing event – Mzansi Magic – on August 9 at Emperors Palace.

The symbolic move follows concerns raised over the absence of women among the originally announced officials for the IBO All Africa super bantamweight title bout featuring Caleigh Swart against Simamkele Tuntsheni.

Two other women’s bouts will also take place.

Recognising both the significance of Women’s Day and the importance of a women’s title fight, the IBO acknowledged the oversight and committed to immediate action in close partnership with renowned promoter Rodney Berman.

Now, Phumeza Zinakile has been named as referee and Sylvia Mokaile as judge for the championship contest, marking a proud and progressive moment for South African boxing. Both officials are respected figures in the national boxing community and their selection reflects a growing commitment to gender inclusion at the highest levels of the sport.

The inclusion of Zinakile and Mokaile will add a welcome layer of symbolism and authenticity to an event already set to celebrate the achievements of women in sport. Their presence underscores the IBO’s willingness to listen, adapt, and support the advancement of women not only in the ring but also in the roles that sustain the sport’s integrity.
