The Filipino maestro making magic with Golden Gloves

Filipino boxing manager Jim Claude Mananquil is carving out a formidable reputation far beyond his homeland. Known for guiding champions like WBC titleholder Melvin Jerusalem, Mananquil is now making his mark in South Africa’s vibrant boxing scene through his work with Golden Gloves.

A former pro boxer himself, he is currently in South Africa overseeing the careers of his two boxers competing this weekend, RV Deniega and Richard Garde.

Mananquil’s most high-profile charge is none other than WBC minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem, who is gearing up for a monumental unification bout against WBO champion Oscar Collazo. This fight represents more than just a title clash, it is Jerusalem’s chance to avenge a tough seventh-round loss to Collazo in 2023.

“Jerusalem is very strong and has earned his place at the top, fighting even in enemy territories,” Mananquil said. “We’ve talked about the unification fight extensively. He’s keen to make that his priority before anything else.”

The manager’s vision extends beyond Jerusalem. He is also closely watching the form of Siya Kuse, who faces a critical eliminator fight later this year against Joey Canoy, another of Mananquil’s promising boxers.

“This fight is perfect for both,” Mananquil explained. “Canoy is like a young Manny Pacquiao, a southpaw with lightning-fast hands. They come from the same city, and Canoy tries to emulate Pacquiao’s style. If Kuse wins, he absolutely deserves a shot at the big time.”

Mananquil’s fondness for South Africa is clear. Having visited several times, he appreciates the country’s vibrant boxing culture and the opportunities it offers. “Filipino boxers who come here always put on a great show,” he noted, praising promoter Rodney Berman for his generosity in flying the fighters in early so they can perform at their best.

Berman echoed the sentiment, expressing optimism about the future. “I’m delighted to be negotiating with Jim. What matters most is that Kuse and Jerusalem keep winning. Neither has an easy fight lined up, but if they prevail, a terrific match-up could be on the horizon.”

With Mananquil’s expert guidance and the promising talent under his wing, the partnership between Filipino boxing and Golden Gloves is poised for exciting chapters ahead, thrilling fans on both sides of the globe.
