Lucky shot as Monyebane lands a title crack

Lucky Monyebane, right, gets his shot at the SA title next month.

Golden Gloves prospect Lucky Monyebane has the chance of a lifetime. On September 3, he will challenge SA junior-lightweight champion Phila Mpontshana in a Johannesburg tournament promoted by ex-fighters Anton Gilmore and Lionel Hunter. It’s a personal triumph for Golden Gloves as Monyebane is the product of a community near Hammanskraal which started a boxing programme in conjunction with Golden Gloves a few years ago.

Monyebane is the direct fruit of this endeavour. He’s a fast-handed prospect who has flourished under the guiding hand of trainer Harold Volbrecht, winning five of his six pro bouts.

In his best performance to date, he stopped battle-hardened Ashley Dlamini in nine rounds in April, underlining his burgeoning reputation.

As good as he was that night, he must be better against Mpontshana (11-1), who has cleaned up in the Eastern Cape and was good enough to be signed by veteran promoter Mzi Mnguni, with whom Golden Gloves enjoys a strong relationship.

It has the makings of an outstanding fight and is the opportunity Monyebane has yearned for ever since he began.

The action will take place at famous fight venue, the Portuguese Hall.
