King Konkco back in the swing

Simpiwe Konkco.

Simpiwe Konkco, one of South Africa’s best little fighters, finally makes his return after a year out with a bout set for Umtata on July 22.

The IBO minimumweight champion will make his third title defence against Toto Landero, the 22-year-old Philippines phenom who recently gave Thammanoon Niyomtrong a good argument for the WBA title.

It will be a popular homecoming for the entertaining champion, who hasn’t fought in his hometown for five years.

Konkco will top the Last Born Boxing Promotions bill, which will feature a top-quality undercard, which is designed to celebrate 100 years of Madiba. The great statesman was born on July 18 100 years ago.

The fight is given greater importance because Konkco is ranked second by the WBC for Wanheng Menayothin’s title. He’s expected to move up to number one, positioning him strongly for a crack at WBC honours.

“It’s must-win for us,” said trainer Colin Nathan. “I’m very happy Simpiwe is getting his chance. He works hard and is hungrier than ever.”
