Golden Gloves raises the stakes for Malajika jnr

The ante has been upped on Charlton Malajika’s international fight against Froilan Saludar next month with Golden Gloves having pencilled in a WBC International title shot for him – but only if he wins on October 4.
The exciting bantamweight prospect is in line to challenge WBC International champion David Mwale on December 27 in Zambia, a gilt-edged opportunity to rapidly climb the WBC rankings.
Ever since turning professional in 2023, the spotlight has been on Malajika, younger brother of IBO champion Ricardo, who has delivered at every turn. In running up an 8-1 ledger, he has looked outstanding, no more so than when he claimed the IBO Youth title against RV Deniega several months ago.
However, beating Saludar at Emperors Palace next month is no sure thing. The Filipino is a veteran of 46 fights and has challenged for the WBO championship in a varied career that has taken him all over the globe.
“It does put more pressure on Charlton, but he’s a youngster who seems to thrive under such circumstances,” said promoter Rodney Berman. “I’ve no doubt he won’t think about December until next month’s fight is wrapped up, but he’ll know the importance of emerging unscathed.”
Southpaw Mwale looks more than capable, relying on his boxing skills and workrate to subdue his opponents. There are no star names on the Zambian’s record, but his path to the International title has been carefully constructed against local opposition and he hasn’t come close to defeat in 11 pro bouts.
