Kevin Lerena will be ringside on Saturday to cheer on stablemate Rowan Campbell, who fights Malkhaz Sujashvili.
It’s the least he could do after Campbell recently travelled top Azerbaijan to support Lerena, the IBO cruiserweight champion, who made a successful title defence.
This association is likely to flourish in the months to come with Golden Gloves determined to push Lerena’s career in Europe, where the leading cruiserweights operate. The plan is to give him both exposure and experience with a million-dollar fight “inevitable”, according to promoter Rodney Berman.
“I am in negotiations with Sauerland Promotions for Kevin to be co-promoted in Europe with them, with Golden Gloves maintaining sole promotional rights in South Africa,” Berman explained.
Berman is high on Campbell and intends featuring him on Lerena’s undercards, building him to the point where he too becomes an elite-level fighter.
“This is why this weekend’s fight is very important. It’s a step-up for Rowan against an opponent with a superior record. The Georgian can punch and although Rowan has knocked out almost everyone he has fought, he’ll find this guy to be tougher than most.”
Campbell fights on the Emperors Palace “Bombs Away” show, which is top-heavy with talent and good fights. Among the SA boxers in action is Jay Jay Sonjica, Wade Groth, Thabiso Mchunu and Thulani Mbenge.
