Big fight in the offing for little stars

DeeJay Kriel, one of the most improved boxers of 2017, could face a tough rematch in March.

It might be a case of déjà vu for DeeJay Kriel if he faces Xolisa Magusha in March – he opened his 2017 campaign against the same fighter.

The difference this time, though, is that Magusha is SA minimumweight champion after stunning Siphamandla Baleni for the title in East London last month.

Given how Magusha and Kriel knocked lumps out of each other last April, promoter Rodney Berman says it’s a rematch he’d like to put together for March 3 at Emperors Palace.

“They’re both holders of a title – Kriel owns the WBC International belt – and there’s bragging rights on offer after Magusha’s big win,” said Berman, adding that he’s even been encouraged on social media to make it happen.

For now, it’s an open invitation to both fighters. If their managers want it, Berman will put up the money and do the deal, ensuring a cracking addition to the bill that includes IBO cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena and SA welterweight champion Thulani Mbenge.
