‘Battle Stations’ taking shape for February

Rowan Campbell will start the Golden Gloves boxing year when he tops the “Battle Stations” fight card at Emperors Palace on February 24.

The afternoon show will showcase several of the country’s best prospects with Boyd Allen, Michael Markram and Ricardo Malajika also set to feature.

Campbell will defend his SA super-middleweight title for the first time, against Yanga Phetani, who last year challenged Barend van Rooyen for the SA middleweight belt. The fight was later ruled a no-contest after Van Rooyen failed a doping test.

He was last in action in June when he beat veteran Johannes Salie.

Campbell has had an outstanding year with three wins – two via KO – and will be looking to move up a level in 2019.

“Winning the SA title definitely triggered something in him,” said trainer Peter Smith. “His energy and enthusiasm is outstanding. He’s going to surprise people.”

Allen, meanwhile, has been matched tough, against John Bopape, who recently upset Namibia’s Anthony Jarmann. The WBA Pan-Africa belt will be on the line, a seemingly hasty title shot for Allen although not without merit given his extensive pedigree in combat sport.
