Remembering ‘The Hitman’: A tribute to Ricky Hatton

The boxing world lost a true legend today. We at Golden Gloves are heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Ricky Hatton.
While the world knew him as “The Hitman,” a two-division world champion and one of the most exciting fighters of his generation, we knew him as a man of genuine warmth, humility, and unwavering passion for the sport we all love.
Ricky was a great friend to Golden Gloves and to South Africa. Over the years, our paths crossed at various boxing events, and no matter the setting, he was always the same guy. What always struck me was his modesty and good humor. He was a guy from the streets, fiercely proud of his Manchester roots, and he never forgot where he came from.
I remember running into him at events all over the world. He was always approachable and friendly, never too busy for a chat. One particular memory stands out: when he was a guest of Golden Gloves in Monte Carlo. He was a superstar in every sense of the word, yet he was super friendly to everyone he met. Not a single request for a photograph or an autograph was declined. He made time for everyone, and it was a testament to his character.
Another time, he was a VIP guest for one of our Emperors Palace tournaments. He loved it, and we loved him.
His fans’ chant, “There’s only one Ricky Hatton,” was more than just a song; it was the truth. There truly will only be one Ricky Hatton. He was a champion in the ring and an even bigger one outside of it.
Rest in peace, champ. Thank you for the memories. – Rodney Berman
