Elite officials set for Emperors Palace title night

When the spotlight shines on Emperors Palace on August 9, two of South Africa’s most anticipated boxing match-ups will unfold beneath the watchful eyes of a world-class officiating team.
The International Boxing Organisation (IBO) has assembled a distinguished panel for both the IBO world super flyweight title defence – Ricardo Malajika versus Jayson Mama – and the all-South African women’s IBO All Africa super bantamweight title bout between Caleigh Swart and Simamkele Tuntsheni.
For Malajika’s defence, the IBO has appointed a panel with deep experience on the world stage:
Referee: Tony Nyangiwe (Johannesburg, South Africa).
Judges: Allen Matakane (East London, South Africa), Jean-Robert Laine (Monaco) and Roger Nii Bonney Barnor (Accra, Ghana).
Nyangiwe is a familiar face in South African and international boxing circles, having officiated numerous high-stakes IBO and Golden Gloves main events at Emperors Palace. His calm authority and command of the ring have earned him assignments in several world title bouts.
Matakane brings a sharp eye and consistency, with a résumé that includes judging IBO, WBA, and WBO title fights across Africa. His scoring has been trusted in some of the continent’s most pivotal bouts.
And Laine is an internationally respected official from Monaco, having worked major European and world championship fights in France, Monaco, and Africa. His experience ensures a global standard of officiating.
Barnor, representing Ghana, is a trusted judge with a track record in IBO and WBO title fights throughout West and Southern Africa, including recent championship matches in Ghana and South Africa.
The vacant women’s IBO All Africa title fight will also benefit from a blend of continental and international expertise:
Referee: Jean-Robert Laine (Monaco).
Judges: Allen Matakane (East London, South Africa), Tony Nyangiwe (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Roger Nii Bonney Barnor (Accra, Ghana).
With Laine stepping into the referee’s role for the women’s title bout, the IBO underscores its commitment to the highest standards for African women’s boxing.
Both Matakane and Nyangiwe have previously worked together on major IBO world and continental title cards, ensuring familiarity and professionalism. Barnor continues his run as one of Africa’s most trusted officials, having judged recent IBO and WBO title fights featuring top African and international talent.
All foreign officials are scheduled to arrive at least 48 hours before fight night, ensuring full preparation and compliance with IBO regulations.
With this blend of local expertise and international experience, Emperors Palace is set for a night of championship boxing that promises not only thrilling action in the ring but also the highest level of fairness and professionalism outside it.
